Volunteer Sign-Up

We welcome members of the IEEE Magnetics Society to volunteer to serve on committees and help shape our future together.

The committees linked below include a description of the committees where, depending on needs, positions may currently be available. We encourage you to carefully read the eligibility criteria and time commitment required to serve on these committees prior to filling out the volunteer sign-up form. Upon submission of the form, based on your committee preference(s), your information will be directed to the relevant committee chair(s) who will respond to you if a position that fits your qualifications and experience is available.

Thank you for your interest in serving the IEEE Magnetics community!

Education Committee

The Education Committee is primarily concerned with three tasks, organization of the Summer School, organizing the Best Student Presentation competition for Intermag conferences, and organizing tutorial sessions for Intermag conferences.

The committee is led by a chair, who serves a term determined by the Society president. The committee relies heavily on the member serving as treasurer – a position appointed by the chair. Members at large serve terms of indefinite length and are expected to contribute to all committee tasks. The committee strives to maintain geographical and gender diversity among its members. The primary committee activities are discussed below.

  1. Organization of the Summer School: The school is held annually, at sites that rotate among Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. It is intended for magnetics Ph. D students, and around 100 students generally attend. Over the one-week course, global magnetics experts present lectures on both fundamentals of magnetics and inspiring cutting-edge research. The Education Committee is involved in virtually all aspects of the school, most importantly soliciting and selecting a host, selecting students, determining the curriculum and speakers, overseeing the execution of the program, and reconciling the budget following the school. Both the chair and the treasurer are generally expected to attend the school in person.

  2. Organizing the Best Student Presentation for Intermag: The Education Committee chair creates a subcommittee to rank and select finalists from the pool of applicants, and a second committee (that may or may not include Education Committee members) to evaluate the presentations in person at Intermag.

  3. Organizing tutorial sessions for Intermag: The committee identifies a tutorial topic, then organizes a program involving global experts on that topic.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Member of IEEE Magnetics Society
  • Active research involvement in the fields of magnetics
  • Ability to attend Intermag, MMM and Joint MMM/Intermag conferences (at least one per year)
Publications Committee

A record of publication in Magnetics Society journals is required for all positions.

The Publications Committee manages the Magnetics Society’s two journals, IEEE Transactions on Magnetics (TMAG, our flagship journal, published since 1965) and IEEE Magnetics Letters (IML, our rapid-publication journal, published since 2010), as well as the online Magnetics Society Newsletter.

We also implement Magnetics Society co-sponsorship of two multi-society journals: IEEE Journal on Exploratory Solid-State Computational Devices and Circuits (JxCDC), which publishes extended articles on solid-state materials, devices, and circuits for novel computation, and IEEE Transactions on Quantum Engineering (TQE), a new open-access journal.

Many volunteer positions offer opportunities for professional and personal growth and networking. We train volunteers and then delegate responsibility. The committee holds entertaining meetings and splendid dinners the day before Intermag and MMM conferences.

Below is a list of volunteer positions, with general responsibilities and qualifications in parentheses. The term commitment for all positions is two years, renewable. Opportunities available soon or now are in bold, but feel free to inquire about future openings and express your interest by submitting this form.
