Description

The Nanotechnology Research Centre, Directorate of Research, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) in association with IEEE Magnetics Society, USA hosted the 5th IEEE Magnetics Society Summer School from July 23 to July 26, 2012 at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), Kattankulathur. The Chief Guest for the function was Dr.Robert Stamps, an eminent professor in the field of magnetism and magnetization dynamics.

This Society Summer School is held globally every year and SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) has got the privilege of hosting the Summer School for the first time in India this year. The IEEE Magnetics Society Summer was for the graduate students studying magnetism related areas. It consisted of lectures by international experts and includes poster presentations by participating graduate students. The program covers fundamentals and advanced topics in magnetism.

Prof. Robert Stamps of Glasgow University Chief Guest at the inaugural function of the 5th IEEE Magnetics Society Summer School Committee, IEEE Magnetics Society, USA released the souvenir to SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) Vice-Chancellor Dr. M. Ponnavaikko. Prof. In his address he stressed the importance of research in magnetism and advised young researchers to enhance their knowledge in Magnetism in the summer school program. He also stated that the magnetism can be used for low cost innovative power generation which would help in redefining the economy

Dr. M. Ponnnavaikko, Vice-Chancellor, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) in his presidential address said that science is transparent and needs lot of research. Detailing the research ideals of the University he added that this five day summer school program would help the participants in enhancing the knowledge power in magnetism.

Dr. Manik Sahani advisor to the Chancellor SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) said science is about perceiving truth and not about enhancing popularity and one should be open to questions if one is not convinced the facts in science. He wished the program a grand success.

Dr. R. Shivaraman Scientist, Nanotechnology Research Centre SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) welcomed the gathering. University officials and faculty members from the Directorate of research and young researchers over 100 from all over the world were present on the occasion.

Prof. C. Gopalakrishnan, Head, Nanoscale Physicist, Nanotechnology Research Center, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) introduced the chief guest. The lectures started on July 23, 2012 at 8.30 AM. On July 25, 2012 the whole group was taken to Mahabalipuram as a part of the Summer School Cultural exchange program. This was followed by Dinner at Latitude 49 at Mahabalipuram and a trip back to the University.

On July 26, 2012 the chancellor's Banquet was arranged where all the students of the Summer School and the Professors of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) had met and interacted with each other.

The Summer School officially ended on 27th evening when two Best posters were awarded to

  1. Marsh Moses - Imaging Of Magnetic Worm Domains In Gd/Fe Multilayers Lensless X-Ray Diffraction
  2. Junjia Ding - Realization Of A Reprogrammable Magnetic Logic Based On A Nanoscale Reconfigurable Magnonic Crystal

Last year the Summer School was held at the University of New Orleans. In 2010 it was held at IFW in Dresden, German and in 2009 at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Dr. D. Narayana Rao, Director (Research) Dr. R. Shivaraman Scientist, Nanotechnology Research Centre, Dr. Manik Sahani advisor to Chancellor, Registrar Dr. N. Sethuraman and Prof. C. Gopalakrishnan, Head, Nanoscale Physicist, Nanotechnology Research Center was also present during the occasion. The program was really a platform to exchange the knowledge and then came to an end.
