Students in Magnetism (SiM) is the youngest local chapter of the IEEE Magnetic Society, the leading international professional organization for magnetism. Young students and early career researchers organize and promote educational activities related to magnetism and its applications.
The main goal of SiM is to organize multiple activities for students of the magnetics community in order to publicize the ubiquity of magnetism in our lives and awaken future vocations in the younger generations. The endless possibilities of magnetism and its applications through a young vision for a young public!

MagnetiSiM 2022: How on EARTH do we measure the EARTH’s magnetic field?
Calling out to one and all, regardless of background and age!
In commemoration of the measurement of the Earth’s magnetic field’s declination by George Graham, and the 190th anniversary of Carl Friedrich Gauss’ measurement of its intensity, SiM is proud to launch its first ever edition of the MagnetiSiM’s series of outreach events!
“MagnetiSiM 2022: How on Earth do we measure the Earth’s magnetic field” will showcase to students and avid learners of all ages on the measurements of the Earth’s magnetic field with a line up of informative do-it-at-home scientific activities, in-person events (region dependent), and talks from invited experts for those who want to go deeper into the subject.
As a collaborative effort across the world, join us in commemorating these scientists and their invaluable contributions by measuring the Earth’s magnetic field at your location, while learning about it!

What do we do?
SiM is a newly born chapter, and many activities for students of the magnetics community are being brewed.
The flagship event is a new conference, the Around-the-Clock Around-the-Globe Magnetics Conference (AtC-AtG), which was initiated in early 2020 at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide an alternative to the cancelled summer school. Since then, temp more editions have been organizing successfully.
Another outreach event will focus on the promotion of the recent developments of magnetic sensors to the general public. This year marks the 300th anniversary of the measurement of the Earth’s magnetic field daily declination by George Graham and the 190th anniversary of Gauss' measurement of its intensity. With this framework, MagnetiSiM2022 will include different activities with experts in magnetism and workshops for the youngest students to discover magnetic sensors in both online and in-person events. More info on this can be found here(link to the MagnetiSiM web page).
Additionally, SiM will help to coordinate the students-led projects to be funded by the Magnetic Society in collaboration with the Education Committee and Summer School organizers. These projects are a great opportunity for PhD students and postdocs to establish new collaborative networks to start research activities with their own funds.
Stay tuned for more to come!
